Born in Maryland in 1974 as a dual national (British and American), Ian Rees was raised in the US, the UK, and Philippines. High schooled in Connecticut, he received a bachelors degree in History from the University of Arizona in 2000, and now resides (mostly - apart from the occasional globe trot) in Tucson, Arizona, nestled in the foothills amongst the magestic Saguaro cacti.
A relative newcomer to the art community, Ian has only been drawing seriously for about 4 years. He has always been keen on the pencil (though he has dabbled in other media such as oils and watercolors) - graphite and colored, for their portability, cleanness, and ability to prodce detail. His favorite subjects thus far have been European cityscapes and portraits of the famous.
In the past, Ian has used antique postcards (that he used to buy, by the dozen, while in Europe) as a source for most of his black and white cityscapes, and created several studies of the great masters. Lately, he has sought to create original material (using his own photography) as his primary source, the basis, for his new pieces. He has begun to reach out to the local modeling community in search portraiture subjects, and continues to take his camera out to the desert and into the urban environment of Tucson in search of material for artwork. He remains committed to developing his talents and creativity as a local Tucson artist - and support other artists within the community while doing so.
