“I am Kakha Chkhataraishvili. I am 59 years old and a painter from Tbilisi. I have been deaf from birth.
During my childhood years all my family and I did our best not to allow my disability to prevent me from living life.
I went to kindergarten and public school.
When I graduated from high school I began trying to figure out where I would go to continue my studies.
During that time I encountered a teacher who noted that I had a sculptor's palms.
She gave me a sculpture of a human ear and told me to replicate it. She told me to have it done in a week. I did it in one day.
When she saw my work it was hard for her to distinguish which was the original and which was my work and she was amazed.
It was then that I decided to pursue sculpture and later painting.
Today, I love my profession. I can paint everywhere – on public transport, as I walk, in the cafe, and at home.
I have a workshop and it's here that I spend the majority of my time. My first exhibition was organized in 1995 and that was dedicated to my dad.
I'm a photographer too and taking photos is another favorite part of my life.”
